Lighthouses are fascinating structures full of history and meaning. They have guided man since the very first maritime activities were recorded, offering a reference point on dry land visible from the sea. These one-of-a-kind buildings can be considered true monuments to the memory of civilization, dating back to a time when the seas were synonymous with trade and prosperity for those who sailed them.
燈塔是一種充滿歷史和意義的迷人建築。自人類開始記錄航海活動以來,它們便指引人們的方向,作為從海上可見的陸地參考點。這些獨一無二的建築可以被視為文明記憶的真正紀念碑,追溯到以航海為貿易與繁榮象徵的時代。
The first documented lighthouse was built in 300 BC near the island of Pharos, in Greece, while the most famous is undoubtedly that of Alexandria in Egypt: one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Overlooking pristine landscapes and located in scenic locations, lighthouses offer much more than a panoramic view of the horizon. They provide man with the opportunity to feel completely isolated from the “civilized” world, offering shelter in a safe place and at the same time guaranteeing a very strong connection with the surrounding nature.
第一座有記載的燈塔建於公元前 300 年,位於希臘法洛斯島附近,而最著名的燈塔無疑是埃及亞歷山大的燈塔:它是古代世界七大奇蹟之一。俯瞰原始風景並坐落於風景如畫的地點,燈塔不僅提供了俯瞰地平線的全景,更讓人有機會完全隔絕於「文明」世界之外,提供安全的庇護所,同時保留與周圍自然環境的深厚聯繫。

The Old Lighthouse, walking towards Punta del Diavolo, located to the south-west and most remote part of San Domino, it is possible see the island’s solitary lighthouse dating back to the early 20th century. Positioned overlooking the sea near the Moray Cave, witness to furious storms and stories of past navigations, it represented for decades a vital reference point for the boats that plied the waters of the Tremiti.

Even though is no longer working, the old lighthouse still represents an icon of San Domino, attracting the attention of those visitors who wish to immerse themselves in the history and unique atmosphere of this enchanted island. With the aim of imagining a new life for this evocative ruined building, we provided a proposal of a small boutique hotel inside the abandoned lighthouse of San Domino.

What if visitors were offered the opportunity to really experience the lighthouse by giving them the chance to lodge in it for a few days? How could an accommodation offer of this type be successfully implemented by integrating it coherently with the surrounding landscape? The hermitic character of the structure will have to be reinterpreted with extreme sensitivity. The enhancement of the relationship with the sea and the natural context will be a key aspect in the evaluation phase of the proposals. The lighthouse will be designed with the intention of providing its visitors with a one-of-a-kind hospitality experience 365 days a year, including the winter months. The idea is to conceive a place of absolute serenity and contact with nature without giving up comfort.
如果遊客可以真實地體驗燈塔,並有機會在此停留幾天,會是怎樣的一種感受? 如何成功實現這類住宿方案,並使其與周圍的景觀和諧共存? 這座建築的隱士性格需要以極大的敏感性重新詮釋。如何加強與海洋及自然環境的關係將是提案評估階段的關鍵。燈塔的設計目標是為遊客提供一年 365 天、包括冬季在內的獨特住宿體驗。這是一個追求絕對寧靜和與自然接觸的場所,同時不會放棄舒適性。
A boutique hotel is a type of accommodation complex characterised by its unique design and intimate atmosphere. These small structures, of limited size and with a restricted number of rooms, stand out for the meticulous attention to detail, the quality of the furnishings and the custom- made services available to guests.
精品酒店是一種以其獨特設計和親密氛圍為特徵的住宿形式。這類小型建築,規模有限且房間數量稀少,以對細節的精心關注、高品質的家具以及為客人量身定制的服務而聞名。


In 1980, Luciana was born in Italy, a graceful and intelligent girl. During her childhood, she often travelled with her family to the Tremiti Islands, where they spent many happy moments. Her father would frequently walk with her around the island, and they especially enjoyed visiting the Old Lighthouse, where they would pause, sit, and chat, savouring the peaceful moments. As a child, Luciana was tiny and often viewed the lighthouse as a giant. However, her father reassured her that the lighthouse was like a kind giant – one to be respected but not feared, as it protected the ships at sea, just as her father protected her. Hearing this, she would smile, knowing her father’s love for her was profound.

At the age of 12, Luciana’s father passed away due to illness. She was deeply saddened and missed her father dearly, often visiting the Old Lighthouse alone to reminisce about their time together. She remembered her father as a giant-like figure, always watching over her. Afterward, she and her mother moved from Italy to the UK, where she continued her education and travelled extensively. Although she hadn’t returned to the Tremiti Islands or the Old Lighthouse for many years, she never forgot her father or the lighthouse.

Although the hotel would be small and accommodate only a few guests, she hoped that every visitor would feel the protective warmth of the “giant” and experience the love she and her father shared.

When we think of a lighthouse, the first thing that comes to mind is light. The light from a lighthouse guides ships and people. A lighthouse is a tower or other type of physical structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses, serving as a beacon for navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. The light of the lighthouse, like Luciana’s father, leads her path. Light is like the eyes of a giant, attentively watching over and protecting everyone.
當我們提到燈塔時,首先會聯想到光明。燈塔的光芒指引著船隻和人們的方向。燈塔是一種塔樓或其他建築結構,設計用來發射光線,通過燈具和透鏡系統作為導航信號,幫助海上或內陸水道的船隻。燈塔的光就如同 Luciana 的父親,引領她的道路。光明如同巨人的眼睛,細心觀察並保護每一個人。
A Fresnel lens, much like the eyes of the giant, is a type of compact composite lens that reduces the amount of material required compared to a conventional lens by dividing the lens into concentric annular sections. This design enhances the efficiency of light transmission. In the hotel design, we extensively use lighting, refraction, and mirrors, combined with other materials, to create a subtly luxurious and comfortable hotel experience.
菲涅耳透鏡,猶如巨人的眼睛,它是一種複合型緊湊透鏡,通過將透鏡分為一系列同心環狀部分來減少材料的使用。這種設計提高了光線的傳遞效率。在酒店的設計中,我們廣泛應用燈光、折射和鏡子,結合其他材料,旨在營造出一種低調奢華而舒適的酒店體驗。

Firstly, regarding the landscape design, we drew inspiration from the refraction of light and the octagonal shape of the lighthouse. We altered the original terrain boundaries to create irregular shapes that accommodate various functions. For example, we reshaped the water tank to create an irregular swimming pool, establishing a visual connection with the new pool at the entrance. We also added an outdoor resting area, furnished with sofas, gathering spaces, and dining areas, allowing guests to enjoy the sea view, the breeze, and a moment of tranquillity.
首先,關於景觀設計,我們從燈光的折射和燈塔的八角形結構中汲取靈感。我們改變了原有地形的邊界,使其變成不規則的形狀,以適應不同的功能需求。例如,我們調整了形狀,創造出一個不規則的游泳池,並與門前的新水池形成視覺上的連結。我們還新增了戶外休息區,配備沙發、聚會區和用餐區,讓旅客能在戶外欣賞海景、享受微風、放鬆心情。
On the west side of the building, there is an outdoor bar where guests can relax and chat in the evenings, providing a serene experience. This area aims to attract not only hotel guests but also residents seeking peace. The incorporation of greenery and water features enriches the environment, blending the hotel with nature. The giant sculpture at the entrance is intended to enhance the artistic atmosphere of the hotel, reflecting Italy’s rich art culture.
在建築物的西側設有戶外酒吧,晚上可以在戶外聊天,享受悠閒時光。這裡除了吸引住客,也希望吸引尋求寧靜的當地人。綠植和水池的設置使環境更加豐富,讓酒店與大自然融為一體。門口的巨人雕塑旨在增添酒店的藝術氛圍,與意大利的藝術文化相輝映。

Upon entering the interior, guests will arrive at the arrival lobby. We have incorporated architectural elements from Italy and Europe, such as arched structures, into the hotel lobby. Octagonal benches and paintings related to the lighthouse are placed on either side to create a symmetrical effect. The ceiling’s light strips guide guests towards the stairs at the back of the building. In the centre of the lobby, we have placed an old stone to commemorate the history of the lighthouse before its renovation, hoping that the new hotel will remind guests of the Old Lighthouse’s past.
進入室內後,會來到酒店大堂。我們參考了意大利及歐洲的建築風格,將拱形結構引入酒店大堂。兩側設有八角形長凳和關於燈塔的油畫,形成對稱效果。天花板的燈光用來指引前往建築物後部的樓梯。在大堂中央,我們放置了一塊老石頭,用以紀念燈塔翻修前的歷史,希望新酒店的落成能讓每位客人記住這座老燈塔曾經的故事。
On the east side of the hotel is The Drawing Room, designed as the check-in area. We opted not to have a traditional reception counter due to the limited number of guests, simplifying the space to include only basic check-in services and comfortable sofa seating. In the evenings, this space becomes a social area where guests can sit together, chat, and share travel experiences and stories about the island.
酒店東邊是大堂客廳,這是專為辦理入住而設的區域。我們不希望設置傳統的接待櫃台,因為酒店客人不多,因此我們將空間簡化為只有基本的入住服務和舒適的沙發座位。晚上的時候,這裡成為一個社交區域,讓客人可以坐在一起聊天,分享旅遊經歷和關於小島的歷史。

On the west side of the hotel is Luciana Bar, featuring a sofa and a wooden dining table. Guests can enjoy breakfast and dinner here before heading to the outdoor bar to appreciate the night view. Luciana Bar is intended to attract not only hotel guests but also external visitors and locals. The decision to have only one table in Luciana Bar aims to foster interaction and enhance social connections between people.
酒店的西邊設有餐廳酒吧,配備一張沙發和一張原木餐桌。客人可以在這裡享用早餐和晚餐,然後前往戶外酒吧欣賞夜景。餐廳酒吧不僅吸引住客,也希望吸引外來旅客和本地居民。我們建議酒吧只設有一張餐桌,旨在促進人與人之間的交流,增加彼此的互動。

In the design of The Drawing Room and Luciana Bar, we used mirrors on the ceiling to create the illusion of a larger space, given the limited ceiling height. We also incorporated colours from the Italian flag – deep green, deep red, and off-white – to emphasize a sense of nobility.
在大堂客廳和餐廳酒吧的設計中,我們使用了鏡子作為天花板裝飾,因為樓層高度有限,我們希望透過鏡子擴大空間感。我們還選用了意大利國旗上的顏色深綠色、深紅色和米白色,以突顯高貴的氛圍。
On the ground floor, there are a gym room and entertainment area, powder rooms, a staff room, and a kitchen. Additionally, we designed two private lifts exclusively for guests, particularly to accommodate elderly visitors, with direct access to their rooms.
另外,設有健身房和娛樂區、化妝間、員工區域以及廚房。我們還設計了兩部專屬的私人電梯,為旅客提供便利,尤其是對於老年人,這兩部電梯可以直達客人的房間。

Regarding The Staircase, we modified the building structure to enlarge the windows, allowing more sunlight to enter and create a refractive effect on the glass tiles in front of the windows. We designed three mirrored walls to form a glass box, transporting guests to a different world and contrasting sharply with other parts of the hotel, reflecting the entire space. The central DNA lighting design evolves with time, extending from the ceiling to the floor, symbolizing transmission, heritage, and guiding light, representing the connection and affection between the giant, the father, and Luciana.

Upon reaching the first floor, will find entrances to two rooms on either side, with a rotating door in the centre that can be closed to transform the space into a large room suitable for accommodating a group of guests. In the centre of the floor, The Gallery features a water pool extending through the ceiling, with sunlight creating a wave-like reflection on the water, evoking an underwater world and bringing the essence of the ocean into the lighthouse. Guests can sit in the centre, immersed in the blend of sunlight and the sea, harmonizing nature with architecture.
當上到一樓時,會發現左右兩邊各有兩間房間的入口,而中間的旋轉門可以關閉,將空間變成一個大型房間,適合接待一大群旅客。樓層中央的畫廊部分,天台的水池會延伸到天花板上,陽光透過水面折射出波浪效果,營造出一個如同海底世界般的氛圍,將海洋的美感引入燈塔之中。旅客可以坐在中央,感受陽光與海洋的融合,讓自然與建築和諧共存。

The room design draws inspiration from Fresnel lenses and octagonal shapes. Upon entering the room, guests are greeted by a wardrobe area for luggage storage and a sofa for relaxation. We have eschewed a traditional bathroom layout in favour of separate shower, toilet, and basin areas to maximize space utilization. The corner bathtub is positioned by the window, allowing guests to enjoy the view while bathing. Natural light filters through the bathroom’s glass door, combined with soft lighting to create an elegant ambiance. The bedroom features a minimalist design with line-patterned wallpaper and off-white paint, providing a comfortable and natural feel, complemented by the scenic view outside the window, creating the perfect rest environment. Morning sunlight fills the room, enhancing a subtle sense of happiness.
至於房間的設計,靈感來源於菲涅耳透鏡和八角形。進入房間後,首先會見到一個衣帽間,供客人放下行李並在沙發上休息。我們摒棄了傳統的洗手間設計,而是將淋浴、廁所和洗手盆區域分開,以增加空間的使用率。角落浴缸設置在窗邊,讓客人在沐浴時可以欣賞美景。自然光透過浴室的玻璃門散射,與柔和的燈光搭配,營造出高貴的感覺。臥室設計比較簡約,使用線條感的牆紙和米白色油漆,帶來舒適自然的氛圍,配合窗外的景色,打造出最理想的休息環境。早晨的陽光進入房間,點亮每個角落,散發出低調的幸福感。


Finally, we have designed a garden on the rooftop, surrounded by flowing water. The reflection of the water blends seamlessly with the sky, forming a natural mirror and offering guests a peaceful retreat. A central water pool extends through the ceiling to the first floor, bringing natural light down. This Roof Garden provides a meditation environment, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the sea and sky in this serene garden.
最後,我們在天台設計了一個花園,這個花園被流水環繞,水面的反射與天空融為一體,形成自然的鏡面,為旅客提供一個寧靜的時光。花園中央設有一個水池,水池的設計貫穿一樓天花板,將自然光引入一樓。這個屋頂花園創造了一個冥想的環境,讓旅客在這個海天一色的花園中放鬆身心,享受片刻的寧靜。

This hotel tells the story of Luciana and the giant, a heartfelt tale between father and daughter. The design of the hotel incorporates a warm and inviting atmosphere, aiming to allow guests from around the world to experience this love at the Old Lighthouse Hotel as if they are enjoying a wonderful vacation under the protection of the giant.
這家酒店講述了 Luciana 和巨人的故事,一段父女間的深情故事。酒店設計中融入了溫暖的氛圍,希望通過這樣的設計,讓來自世界各地的旅客在這間老燈塔酒店中感受到這份愛,就如同在巨人的保護下度過一個美好的假期。
